Summary
Examines conflict between Donald Thomson and A.P. Elkin, for which a number of explanations have been offered and examines Thomson's estrangement from Australian National Research Council and anthropological establishment; focuses on Thomson's 1935-37 Arnhem Land Expedition and development of ideas about segregation as way of enabling cultural and biological survival, formulation of John McEwen's 'New Deal' for Aboriginal people in 1939 (basically an assimilation policy) and argument over Woomera Rocket Range in 1946-47 in order to understand reasons for estrangement; argues Thomson's estrangement pre-dated conflict with Elkin and gives ways Thomson himself contributed to estrangement; although complaints made about Elkin by other anthropologists argues estrangement more than result of Thomson and Elkin's bitter conflict
