Summary
The Aurukun Mission, situated on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula, was established in 1904 by Moravian missionaries sponsored by the Presbyterian Church. In 1925 it was handed over to the Australian Presbyterian Board of Missions and from 1972 it was managed by the Board of Ecumenical Missions and Relations (BOEMAR) of the Presbyterian Church of Australia. From 1976, the Church became part of the Uniting Church of Australia. The activities of the Mission fell under the jurisdiction of the Queensland Department of Native Affairs (from 1965 the Department of Aboriginal and Island Affairs and from 1975 the Department of Aboriginal and Islanders Advancement). From 1972 the Mission also came under the Commonwealth Department of Aboriginal Affairs. In 1978 the area of the Mission was gazetted as a shire. During the period documented in this collection, the Aboriginal population was between 500-700;
