Summary
Common Ground is about the interaction between Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Australian South Sea Islander people. It reveals the conflicts and similarities of these cultures. The program was made specifically for the 3 cultural groups to encourage debate, for people to sit down and work towards solutions with positive outcomes. We all live the legacy of times gone by. Although things have improved, we are still a long way from achieving the health, opportunity and dignity we all deserve. Holding us back is a problem that isn't about prejudice out there in Mainstream Australia. It's right here in Black Australia, and its causing conflict and bitter division in some communities. Over the generations, friendship and fighting amongst the ATSI and Australian South Sea Islander people has always been part of our struggle for survival. Our treatment of each other has come from colonisation and being played off, one against the other. We were each treated different, with land, with our cultures, with employment, with funding and many other ways, we blamed each other. Traditionally, all our behaviours were governed by respect and our cultural ways. We all have to take responsibility for our actions towards each other. No amount of money will fix these problems, but adopting a respectful and responsible attitude will go a long way towards remedying the situation. When we think of our rights, we must also consider our responsibilities. The solutions are within us. A responsible person in your community would be needed to introduce Common Ground, someone who is able to steer conversation to positive talk and feedback. A reconciliation amongst ourselves
