Summary
Master tape of the 1993 documentary film Freedom Ride, episode 2 of the Blood Brothers documentary series. The film explores the life of outspoken civil rights leader Charles Perkins and the development of the 1960s civil rights movement in Australia, bringing together a substantial range of archival footage, interviews with participants and dramatic recreations of important events. The program was directed by Charles’ daughter Rachel Perkins; his son Adam Perkins plays Charles as a young man. One of the first Aboriginal people to graduate from university, Charles Perkins grew up on a reserve, separated from his relatives. He was shunned by white Australian society and his early experiences of racism spurred him to go on to university and to challenge racial inequality. He soon came to the forefront of direct action against oppression and injustice, leading a group of University of Sydney students on the February 1965 freedom rides, a bus tour through western New South Wales towns, in a campaign to expose their racial segregation practices and the shame of Australia's treatment of their Aboriginal people
