Summary
Brings together two of today's leading concerns in development policy - the urgent need for poverty reduction and the situation of Indigenous people in both developing and industrialised countries. Chapter 11 'Indigenous peoples, poverty and self-determination in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States' by Stephen Cornell compares the situation of Indigenous peoples in these four countries, especially the mismatch between Indigenous demands for self-determination and state programmes to address socio-economic disadvantage. Chapter 14 'Indigenous anti-poverty strategies in an Australian town' by Robyn Eversole, Leon Ridgeway and David Mercer examines 'insider' or community-driven anti-poverty strategies in one Indigenous Australian community over a two year period from April 2001 to April 2003
