Summary
"This paper situates Indigenous Studies within a wider social justice framework, highlighting the importance of the field to informing, contextualising, and understanding Indigenous issues in Australia. We trace the emergence of Indigenous Studies from its anthropological roots as the study of a primitive 'Other', to its contemporary place as a unique multidisciplinary field of study within the university that promotes respect for Indigenous knowledges and self-determination. Providing examples, we argue that Indigenous Studies can equip students with the most important tool for social justice: the ability to participate in an informed and respectful conversation around Indigenous issues in Australia, both in and outside of the classroom." -- Taken from page 185 of Abstract
