Summary
Master tape of the 1993 documentary film Jardiwarnpa - a Warlpiri fire ceremony, episode 4 of the Blood Brothers documentary series. In the film, Darby Jampijinpa Ross, a Warlpiri elder in his eighties and survivor of the Coniston massacre, introduces the Jardiwarnpa fire ceremony, a central celebration in traditional Warlpiri culture. The ceremony is described by the Warlpiri as paying respects to ancestors and to make people friendly towards one another. The ceremony, staged over several weeks at Yuendumu in the Northern Territory and involving hundreds of people, concludes in a spectacular climax of ritual burning of the kirda or “owners” of the ceremony by the kurdungurlu or “managers” of the ceremony. The ceremony serves to purge ill feelings, resolve relationships and provide entertainment and education for the whole community. The episode, directed by Ned Lander, shows a traditional ceremony conducted in a contemporary context. The episode is a co-production with Warlukurlangu Artists Association, Warlpiri Media and City Pictures. This is a condensed version of the ceremony; traditionally this is a story that travels 3000-4000 miles over 4-6 months. For the purposes of filming it was condensed into four weeks. Prior to filming, anthropologist Marcia Langton worked with the community in the script writing phase. The episode is also significant for providing documentation of a sister ceremony to the Ngatjakula fire ceremony recorded in anthropologist Nicolas Peterson and filmmaker Kim McKenzie’s 1977 ethnographic film A Walbiri Fire Ceremony - Ngatjakula
