Summary
Ethnographic film which documents Aboriginal people in the north Kimberley area of Western Australia. The film features Aboriginal people from the Oombulgurri, Kununurra and Hall's Creek area of the Kimberleys. The film investigates elements of traditional Aboriginal culture which are still practiced. It shows a group of men participating in a Corroboree, and an old man, Albert Barunda, telling a story about why children must obey their parents. As well, the film uses the soundtrack of an Aboriginal man discussing the importance of teaching Aboriginal law to children. The film also looks at how life has changed for Aboriginal communities in this region with white settlement. One non-Indigenous narrator explains that Aboriginal people are having to make a huge change by learning about European technology, as learning technology requires the learning of the culture which creates that technology. The film also looks at the way Aborigines are trying to create their own future by becoming self reliant, showing the development of farmland at the Aboriginal reserve at Oombulgurri. The film also explains that many Aboriginal people are beginning to see a need to become involved in white politics to protect their land, culture and provide a future for their communities. The film features Josephine Boyle, Mona Green, John Gallager and Jack Johnson from the Aboriginal communities of the area. 'Kimberley Singing' was filmed in approximately 1987. Footage includes; Aboriginal men in Coroberee, dancing, singing and playing music; Aboriginal men hunting emus; Aborigines working farm at Oombulguri; Aboriginal man fishing; children playing at waterhole; and Albert Barunda telling story of boy captured by devil after disobeying his mother
