Summary
"Next Wave leads a new creatively-driven generation through extraordinary development and presentation opportunities that empower emerging artists to challenge our understanding of what art can be. Dancer Ghenoa Gela, a Koedal (Crocodile) and Waumer (Frigate Bird) woman, speaks about the Torres Strait Islander stories of creation that influenced her 'Next Wave Festival 2014' work 'Winds of Woerr'. Utilising both Indigenous and non-Indigenous performers to tell the stories of her family, 'Winds of Woerr' interrogates cross-cultural collaboration whilst presenting Torres Strait movements in new contexts. With the support of her family and elders, Ghenoa takes her place as storyteller, preserving her own cultural mythologies and acting as a conduit for Torres Strait traditions to reach new audiences."
