Summary
"If 'listening' has emerged as a theme in public debate recently, one of the reasons for this has been a widespread tiredness and frustration with the bloody-minded partisanship of the 'culture wars'. Part of the appeal of the theme is a promise that this partisanship may be transcended, opening a more conversational style of politics directed towards addressing real problems rather than simply point-scoring. If, since the fault-lines of the 1960s and 1970s, the dominant mode of cultural politics has been to shout down opponents, 'listening' holds out the hope of a transformation. The paper considers the idea of the 'radical centre' as one area where these ideas have recently converged. It focuses particularly on the writing of Australian Indigenous leader Noel Pearson, who has advocated this idea as offering the best hope for his people. While Pearson's openness to conservative positions has brought him widespread criticism from progressive commentators and academic cultural studies, I argue that it has certain similarities with the New Left of the 1950s, where 'listening' was also an important theme. Reading the idea of the radical centre alongside the history of the New Left may help us to clarify and historically contextualize what is at stake in the theme. " [Author' abstract]
