Summary
For Martu, fire comes from Jukurrpa - those characters and events that created country and the present. Fire is a life force with benefits and dangers. Today, Martu are amongst the last people in the world to walk, hunt and burn their country. Close to communities, small careful burns create a fine-patchwork of habitats. But burning is tricky; fire is fickle. There are good and bad fires, different effects over time and space. Far from communities, wildfires from lightening and accidental ignitions are destroying Martu lands. These wildfires are more than two hundred times larger than burns made when indigenous people lived throughout Australia's Sandy Deserts. Recent wildfires are visible from space; the most dangerous fires in Martu lifetimes. Martu ask - What can we learn from older Martu people? What can they teach us? What can we learn from whitefellas? Here, is 'the tip of the iceberg' in what Martu say and do with fire on their country in the past and present
