Summary
Aimed at non-Indigenous staff in family services, this manual provides information and guidance on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Taking a strengths-based approach, it aims to promote respectful and strong relationships between non-Indigenous and Indigenous organisations, staff, and clients. Chapter 1 provides background information on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander beliefs, cultures, family structures, and traditional child rearing practices. Chapter 2 explains the social context and effects of colonisation, land dispossession, and the Stolen Generations, as well as the contemporary response by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, such as the movements for land rights, self determination, community-controlled organisations, and culture. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on developing culturally competent professional practice skills, including effective communication, avoiding bias, and cultural protocols. Chapters 5 and 6 focus on developing culturally competent services and culturally appropriate programs, and includes information on engaging with communities and organisations, building relationships, consultation, guiding principles, engaging and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, and the use of action research. Case studies of best practice services are also included
